What Do You Need To Be A Psychologist In Texas?

The requirements in Texas ensure that all psychologists have a great range of knowledge and education in order to treat patients. This means having the correct degrees in order to practice. 

In order to become a psychologist in Texas, you  need to earn your PhD or a PsyD.

This means that you have to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree, which takes around 4 years, or sometimes more if studying part time. 

Then, you would have to earn a Master’s Degree, which is an additional 2 years, followed by the PHD or PsyD which is an additional 2-4 years. This means that it could take up to 10 years of studying to qualify as a psychologist.  

Even after you have attained your degree, you would need to undergo supervised professional experience requirements.

In the state of Texas, you have to complete at least 2 years of supervised experience. One of these years may be part of your doctoral program, whilst another year must be done after the doctoral degree is completed. 

Then, with this under your belt, you would need to seek licensure as a psychologist in Texas.

This involves undergoing an examination that is administered by the American Association of State Psychology Board. It consists of 225 multiple choice questions. 

In addition, you will need to take the Jurisprudence Examination by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.
